If you suffer from back pain, you know how aggravating it can be. Bending over, lifting things, even standing for too long can make your back hurt, but you don’t have to continue suffering. There are several things you can do to help ease your back pain so you can go back to living a pain-free life. Here are 5 ways that can help you to alleviate your back pain and get back to living your life:

1. Correct your posture

This is one that many people seem to overlook, and for good reason. Many of us don’t even realize that we are slouching when we sit or hunching over a little bit when we are standing. But this is one easy way that we can do to alleviate chronic back pain. Straighten out your back, suck your stomach, pinch your shoulder blades together, and make sure your chest is sticking out a little. This will strengthen your back muscles as well as take pressure off of your spine and ligaments in your back, ideally alleviating pain.

2. Buy a luxury mattress

Sometimes, it just boils down to what you are sleeping on. If your mattress is old or not very good, you may want to consider purchasing a better mattress. Not only will you sleep better and wake up feeling rejuvenated, you will reduce back pain and be able to live life with less pain again. But this is purchase isn’t one you want to go cheap on. After all, you spend about a third of your day in bed. You might as well ensure that that third of your day is the most comfortable and provides you with the best environment for recovery A good mattress is one of the more important purchases you will make, so be sure you buy the best one in your budget.

3. Stay away from heavy lifting

If your back is in pain, don’t try to tough it out and keep on moving things that are too heavy for you. But, if you have to move something, make sure you use correct form so that you don’t end up with a sore back and a regretful mind. Keep your back straight, lift with your legs, and avoid twisting. If it is still causing you pain, have someone help you lift it. Whatever it is, it probably isn’t worth hurting yourself over.

4. Exercise your back

If your back is in pain, chances are that part of the reason is because your back isn’t quite as strong as it used to be. This can be helped by trying to re-strengthen your back through several exercises. You can find some online or you could go to a local gym and consult a trainer there; chances are they know how to rehabilitate a weak back. Also be sure to strengthen your core and to stay away from high-impact exercises, like running or jumping excessively.

5. Lose weight

If you are overweight at all, that may be contributing to your back pain. So, a good way to cut down on back pain is to cut down on intake of bad foods and to increase frequency of low-impact exercises. That way, your back won’t have to support as much weight and it can take a bit of a load off, generally resulting in reduced pain.

Suffering from an injury or an accident just before you’re about to go on holiday can be a devastating experience. When these situations arise, you might think about postponing or even cancelling your trip, depending on the severity of your symptoms or level of discomfort.

Before deciding, you should always talk to your doctor first, and ask them whether a trip away from home would be safe for you in your current state of health.

If your GP is happy for you to travel, the next stage is preparation. If you’re currently taking prescription pain relief or other medication for your pain-related illness, there are a number of things you should remember to do before you head off to the airport.

Take your prescription paperwork
Ensure that you pack all relevant prescription documents related to your medication. It is also important to carry any medicines in their original packaging. Always keep a copy of your prescription at home so in the event of loss, you can swiftly get all the details over the phone if needed.

Get a letter from your doctor
Before travelling, it’s always best to obtain a letter from your doctor stating which medications you are currently taking and, where appropriate, for which condition. This might cost you a small fee, but is necessary in many cases for customs purposes.

Travel insurance
If you’re not feeling 100 per cent but are determined not to let it spoil your holiday, don’t take any unnecessary risks. Take out travel insurance before you go, so that you are fully covered if your condition worsens, or if your medication is lost in transit and you need to obtain replacement treatment.

Take the correct amount
If you’re only going to be away for a short period, then there’s no need to take your entire course of medication with you. Just take what you need – work out exactly how many days’ worth of treatment you need to take with you, and add one or two extra days’ worth just in case you get stuck at the airport on the way back.

Call the airline
For those taking prescription-strength pain relief treatments, such as tramadol or codeine, or any other medication, call your airline’s customer service line beforehand and ask them if there are any travel restrictions regarding these. There may be special guidelines you need to follow, or documentation you need to fill out.
